The Library
A student’s reading journey is celebrated and nurtured at Sandhurst School. We are here for both the avid reader who loves talking about books and discovering new reads and the reluctant reader who needs encouragement to find the right text to spark an interest. Our reading culture is supported by offering students a wide variety of opportunities to explore texts and help to develop reading skills and knowledge.

Book choice
We encourage students to make their own reading choices and to feel that these are valued. At the beginning of year 7, students discover 16 Book Buzz titles during library lessons and choose their favourite. This book is purchased for them, and the money goes to The Book Trust charity, providing more children with access to books. The library also stocks a large selection of diverse, up-to-date and interesting fiction and non-fiction books. Popular sections include sport, cookery and graphic novels, and we have everything from classic novels to young fiction favourites.
Library lessons
All students from years 7 to 9 enjoy an hour’s library lesson every two weeks. This is an opportunity to discover new books, have quiet reading time and take part in a variety of library activities. We hold treasure hunts, writing competitions, games, quizzes and author events. Recent and upcoming author visits include Seth Burkett (Play Like Your Football Heroes and The Football Goat Series), David Barker (London Falling Trilogy) and multi-award-winning author Tom Palmer, known for football, rugby, and historical fiction. Author visits encourage our students to engage with new books and to explore their own potential as future authors.

Reading Assessments
Reading assessments take place three times a year during library lessons, enabling us to track progress in the skill of reading and support where needed with phonics or literacy interventions. Improving reading skill and literacy is a partnership between students, teachers and parents and is crucial in unlocking the keys to success in all subjects.

Tutor reading programme
Tutor groups discover books together through a twice-weekly reading programme. Tutors and year 11 Reading Ambassadors read to students who follow along in their copy. The selection of books for the programme is carefully curated and exposes students to a wide variety of texts as they progress through school.
After school activities
The library is a vibrant hub and home to many clubs, including Dungeons and Dragons, Lego Club, Book Club and Library Club. We have hosted Harry Potter Day events, World Book Day Quizzes, Dungeons and Dragons special events, author book signings and attended book award events.
