LIFE

Intent:

The LIFE curriculum has been designed to offer a rich and diverse approach to understanding some of the key issues at play in the world in which we find ourselves. Our Values as a school are respect, ambition, resilience and pride, they are integral to our curriculum and approach to learning. It aligns with both the Citizenship and Religious Studies GCSE specification to ensure students wishing to study at GCSE level are fully prepared for the expectations of these courses, but essentially over their time in KS3 we are looking to support all of our pupils to develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally.

In LIFE we encourage students to have an opinion and to confront the bigger and more abstract questions in life both critically and responsibly. We explore current affairs and injustices in the world to broaden the minds of pupils and seek to motivate students to be active citizens in society.

Our Curriculum

We aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum which accurately represents society, however we will have a particular focus on Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and non-religious views, all in line with the locally agreed syllabus and GCSE specification.

Our curriculum is designed to equip students with the knowledge, understanding, and skills necessary to develop their identity and sense of self-worth, explore and understand a range of ethical and moral issues, engage with and learn from different faiths and cultures, become responsible and active citizens and make informed decisions about their lives.

Building upon the school's core values of respect, ambition, resilience, and pride, the LIFE curriculum encourages students to question, analyse, and evaluate information from diverse perspectives. To foster ethical judgement by exploring moral dilemmas and real-world scenarios. To promote respect and appreciation for different cultures, religions, and beliefs. To cultivate an understanding of issues and encourage students to become responsible global citizens.

We are also committed to supporting students in developing their identity, self-worth, and confidence, by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to navigate emotional and physical well-being throughout their lives. The curriculum we offer promotes a safe and inclusive environment where students can express their opinions and engage in respectful dialogue.

Implementation: Teaching and planning

In lessons we utilise a variety of methods, such as discussions, presentations, extended writing and creative activities to cater to different learning styles. In addition, we try to incorporate current events and relevant real-world issues and historical events into the curriculum. This is so that we can create a stimulating environment, where critical thinking is encouraged. Where possible and appropriate we involve guest speakers, often through the use of citizenship days.

Assessment

The LIFE Department assesses students three times each year, inline with the school policy of providing a formal assessment grade at the end of each term. These assessments assess the level of knowledge the students have gained, alongside the application of certain skills, such as evaluation and analysis. The students are given dedicated time to reflect on their performance and address weaknesses. Feedback is provided in written and verbal form as a means of directing students towards making improvements in their work.

Impact

By implementing these values and strategies, the LIFE curriculum aims to empower students to become well-rounded individuals with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to navigate a complex and interconnected world.
